Millionaire businessman Christopher Foster laid a complex network of fuel pipes through his mansion to ensure it burned to the ground, it emerged on Wednesday night.

rig something up - [phrasal verb] to make a piece of equipment, furniture etc quickly from objects that you find around you:
We rigged up a simple shower at the back of the cabin (строить наспех, сооружать из чего попало)
fuel pipe - топливопровод (труба, проводящая топливо)

emerge - if facts emerge, they become known after being hidden or secret
Later it emerged that the judge had employed an illegal immigrant. (стало известно)

The 50-year-old diverted oil from a storage tank to flood the stable, house and garage, before setting it alight, it is believed.

divert - to change the direction in which something travels
Canals divert water from the Truckee River into the lake. (направлять в другую сторону)

stable - a building where horses are kept (конюшня)
alight - burning:
The car was set alight and pushed over a hill. (to set alight - поджечь)

The first pictures of firefighters tackling the ferocious blaze at Osbaston House last Tuesday were also released.

tackle - to try to deal with a difficult problem:
It took twelve fire engines to tackle the blaze.(бороться)
ferocious - violent, dangerous, and frightening:
a ferocious, hungry lion (свирепый)
blaze - a big dangerous fire - used especially in news reports
It took almost 100 firemen to bring the blaze under control. (пожар)

Two bodies found in the mansion have been identified as Mr Foster and his wife, Jill, 49, who died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The body of a third victim, thought to be their daughter Kirstie, has yet to be identified.

Reports suggest the 15-year-old was shot in the back of the head as she chatted to friends on the social networking website Bebo.

Det Supt Jon Groves said officers may not be able to confirm whether the third body is Kirstie for a while.

'It will be some time into next week, and possibly longer, before we have those results,' he said.

He would not confirm Mr Foster laid the pipe network, saying: 'I am not prepared to comment on speculation.'

There is speculation that the president is ill.

Detectives think Mr Foster suffered a breakdown triggered by the collapse of his company and decided to destroy his £1.2million home in Maesbrook, Shropshire, rather than see it sold to creditors.

breakdown - a serious medical condition in which someone becomes mentally ill and is unable to work or deal with ordinary situations in life:

CCTV footage showed him striding around his property with the rifle he used to slaughter his wife, daughter and animals.
