The Birth of Fiber Optics

In 1958, at the US Army SignalCorps Labs in <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>Fort Monmouth</st1:City> <st1:State w:st=«on»>New Jersey</st1:State></st1:place>, the Manager of CopperCable and Wire heated the signal transmission problems caused by lightening andwater. He encouraged the Manager of Materials Research, Sam DiVita, to find areplacement for copper wire. Sam thought glass fiber and light signals mightwork, but the engineers who worked for Sam told him a glass fiber would break! In September 1959, Sam DiVita asked second Lt. Richard Sturzebecher if he knewhow to write the formula for a glass fiber capable of transmitting lightsignals. (Sam had learned that Richard, who was attending the <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:PlaceName w:st=«on»>Signal</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st=«on»>School</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>,had melted 3 triaxial glass systems, using SiO2, for his 1958 senior thesis atAlfred

University under Dr. HaroldSimpson, Professor of Glass Technology.)

Richard knew the answer. Whileusing a microscope to measuring the index-of-refraction on SiO2 glasses,Richard developed a severe headache. The 60% and 70% SiO2 glasses powders underthe microscope allowed higher amounts of brilliant, white light to pass throughthe microscope slide into his eyes. Remembering the headache and the brilliantwhite light from high SiO2 glass, Richard knew that the formula would be ultrapure SiO2. Richard also knew that <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>Corning</st1:City></st1:place>made high purity SiO2 powder, by oxidizing pure SiC14 into SiO2. He suggestedthat Sam use his power to award a Federal Contract to <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>Corning</st1:City></st1:place> to develop the fiber.

Sam DiVita had already workedwith <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>Corning</st1:City></st1:place>research people. But he had to make the idea public, because all researchlaboratories had a right to bid on a Federal contract. So, in 1961 and 1962,the idea of using high purity SiO2 for a glass fiber to transmit light was madepublic information in a bid solicitation to all research laboratories. Asexpected, Sam awarded the contract to the Corning Glass Works in <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>Corning</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st=«on»>New York</st1:State></st1:place>in 1962. Federal funding for glass fiber optical at <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>Corning</st1:City></st1:place> was about 1,000,000 $ between 1963and 1970. Signal Corps Federal funding of many research programs on fiber opticaluntil 1985, thereby seeding this industry and making today'smultibillion-dollar industry that eliminates copper wire in communications arealty.

Today, at age 87, Sam DiVitastill comes to work at the US Army Signal Corps every day.

Index of Refraction: The ratio of thevelocity of light in free space to the velocity of light in a fiber material.Always greater than or equal to one. Also called refractive index.

Refractive Index: A property ofoptical materials that relates to the speed of light in the material versus thespeed of light in a vacuum.

Optical Fiber: A glass orplastic fiber that has the ability to guide light along its axis. The threeparts of an optical fiber are the core, the cladding, and the coating orbuffer.

Core: Thelight-conducting central portion of an optical fiber composed of material witha higher index of refraction than the cladding. The portion of the the fiber thattransmits light.

Short history of fiber optics.

Part 1

Optical communication systems date back two centuries,to the «optical telegraph» that French engineer Claude Chappe invented in the 1790s. His system was a series ofsemaphores mounted on towers, where human operators relayed messages from onetower to the next. It beat hand-carried messages hands down, but by themid-19th century was replaced by the electric telegraph, leaving a scatteringof «Telegraph Hills» as its most visible legacy.

Alexander GrahamBell patented an optical telephone system, which he called the Photophone, in 1880, but his earlier invention, thetelephone, proved far more practical. He dreamed of sending signals through theair, but the atmosphere didn't transmit light as reliably as wires carriedelectricity. In the decades that followed, light was used for a few specialapplications, such as signalling between ships, butotherwise optical communications, like the experimental PhotophoneBell donated to the Smithsonian Institution, Languished on the shelf.

In the interveningyears, a new technology slowly took root that would ultimately solve theproblem of optical transmission, although it was a long time before it wasadapted for communications. It depended on the phenomenon of total internalreflection, which can confine light in a material surrounded by other materialswith lower refractive index, such as glass in air. In 1840s, Swiss physicistDaniel Collodon and French physicist Jacques Babinet showed that light could be guided along jest ofwater for fountain displays. British physicist John Tyndall popularized lightguiding in a demonstration he first used in 1854, guiding light in a jet ofwater flowing from a tank. By the turn of the century, inventors realized thatbent quartz rods could carry light, and patented them as dental illuminators.By the 1940s, many doctors used illuminated plexiglasstongue depressors.

Optical fiberswent a step further. They are essentially transparent rods of glass or plasticstretched so they are long and flexible. During the 1920s, John Logie Baird in England and Clarence W. Hansell in the LESSONed States patented the idea of using arrays of hollowpipes or transparent rods to transmit images for television or facsimilesystems. However, the first person known to have demonstrated imagetransmission through a bundle of optical fibers was Heinrich Lamm, than a medical student in <st1:City w:st=«on»><st1:place w:st=«on»>Munich</st1:place></st1:City>. His goal was to look inside inaccessibleparts of the body, and in a 1930 paper he reported transmitting the image of alight bulb filament through a short bundle. However, the unclad fiberstransmitted images poorly, and the rise of the Nazis forced Lamm,a Jew, to move to <st1:country-region w:st=«on»><st1:place w:st=«on»>America</st1:place></st1:country-region>and abandon his dreams of becoming a professor of medicine.

Short history of fiber optics.

Part 2

In 1951, Holger Moeller {or Moeller, the o has a slash through it} Hansen applied for aDanish patent on fiber-optic imaging. However, the Danish patent office deniedhis application, citing the Baird and Hansell patents, and Moeller Hansen wasunable to interest companies in his invention. Nothing more was reported onfiber bundles until 1954, when Abraham van Heel of the Technical University ofDelft in <st1:City w:st=«on»><st1:place w:st=«on»>Holland</st1:place></st1:City>and Harold. H. Hopkins and Narinder Kapany of <st1:PlaceName w:st=«on»>Imperial</st1:PlaceName><st1:PlaceType w:st=«on»>College</st1:PlaceType> in <st1:place w:st=«on»><st1:City w:st=«on»>London</st1:City></st1:place> separately announced imaging bundlesin the prestigious British journal Nature.

<span Arial",«sans-serif»;color:black; mso-ansi-language:EN-US">Neither van Heel nor Hopkins and Kapanymade bundles that could carry light far, but their reports the fiber opticsrevolution. The crucial innovation was made by van Heel, stimulated by aconversation with the American optical physicist Brian O'Brien. All earlierfibers were «bare», with total internal reflection at a glass-airinterface. Van Heel covered a bare fiber or glass or plastic with a transparentcladding of lower refractive index.

<span Arial",«sans-serif»;color:black; mso-ansi-language:EN-US">This protected the total-reflection surface fromcontamination, and greatly reduced crosstalk between fibers. The next key stepwas development of glass-clad fibers, by Lawrence Curtiss, then an undergraduate at the University of Michigan working part-time on aproject to develop an endoscope to examine the inside of the stomach withphysician Basil Hirschowitz then working at theAmerican Optical Co., made glass-clad fibers at about the same time, but hisgroup lost a bitterly contested patent battle). By 1960, glass-clad fibers hadattenuation of about one decibel per meter, fine for medical imaging, but muchtoo high for communications.

<span Arial",«sans-serif»;color:black; mso-ansi-language:EN-US">Meanwhile, telecommunications engineers were seekingmore transmission bandwidth. Radio and microwave frequencies were in heavy use,so they looked to higher frequencies to carry loads they expected to continueincreasing with the growth of television and telephone traffic. Telephonecompanies thought video telephones lurked just around the corner, and wouldescalate bandwidth demands even further. The cutting edge of communicationsresearch were millimeter-wave systems, in which hollow pipes served aswaveguides to circumvent  pooratmospheric transmission at tens of gigahertz, where wavelengths were in themillimeter range.
